Introduction to Meditation and Mindfulness @ Miles and Green

Mindfulness and Meditation seem to be everywhere nowadays, available in every form from 2 minute apps to ten day silent retreats. But what is mindfulness? What are the real benefits of meditation? How can spending time quietly looking at what’s going on inside our own mind help us in the real world? In this workshop, we will take a tour through the fundamentals of meditation, it’s Buddhist roots as well as what science has to say about the benefits of mindfulness. We will try out several different kinds of meditation from different schools, each with their own objectives. You’ll have plenty of time to ask questions, and you’ll get real practical hands-on experience that you can take back into your everyday life. We will even provide refreshments, as that gives us a chance to practice eating mindfully! Whether you’re a meditation newbie, you’ve been using a meditation app, or you’ve read a blog post or a book and want to try it for real, this workshop is for you.

Modern living is often busy, stressful and pressured; yoga can be a tonic for this and provide a space to connect with a deeper sense of ease and calm. Simply moving breath and body together can release tension and energy, potentially improving mood, sleep, energy levels as well as reducing worry and irritability.
This class will explore a nourishing and mindful approach to yoga, combining postures, mindful movement, pranayama (breathing exercises) and relaxation practices. Building strength and flexibility, at the same time supporting your wellbeing.
There is an emphasis on slowing down and connecting with the breath and body. Plenty of time is given to explore postures and find that important balance of effort and ease. Leave feeling rejuvenated with a deeper sense of calm and ease.
Josie is passionate about making classes accessible for anyone who has an interest in yoga. This is a relaxed and fun class, suitable for all levels.
Being able to touch your toes is not necessary!

Our lives today so often seem very difficult, with endless interruptions and expectations put upon us. Many of us find ourselves worrying about particular thought seemingly endlessly, or unable to fall asleep easily at the end of the day. Over this six week course, we will be looking at ways we might use our breath, along with meditation and mindfulness, to help with anxiety and insomnia. Although we can’t make the external causes of stress disappear, what we can sometimes do is find different ways to handle them in our everyday lives. Modern science has shown that these techniques can be remarkably effective at this, and that although some of these practices dates back at least 2,500 years, they can be very relevant and useful for us today. Come and join our course and start de-stressing your brain!

Do you have a child or young adult in your life who would enjoy meditation? Mindfulness meditation for young people has been shown to increase focus and attention, to boost confidence and self-compassion, and to provide a valuable resource that can help cope with stress. Of course, we all want these benefits – this is definitely an opportunity for you to build new skills as well! We increasingly live in an “attention economy”, with social media and other distractions threatening to fragment our lives: mindfulness can help us all find our way through this maze, and help us re-centre ourselves.

We’ve already run a number of mindfulness workshops at Miles and Green, and this summer we are offering a six week course in mindfulness and meditation for adults and young people together. Each session, we will introduce a particular form of mindfulness or other meditation practice, and then give you both a chance to try it out and ask questions. We’ll also talk about how it can help in our everyday lives, and offer you some suggestions about how you both might build on the practice between sessions.

If you’re planning some time away during the summer, don’t worry – you can skip a couple of weeks and you’ll still get a lot of value from the rest of the sessions. This course will be aimed at adults together with young people aged from 8 to 18 (our teacher, Clive, has been meditating since he was 12). There are no prerequisites for either of you, other than the ability to sit and pay attention for 45 minutes or so, respectful of the others in the class. There will be lots of variety and practical exercises, opportunities to sit quietly and times to interact together. If you would like to accompany more than one child, please do, although do remember that you’ll need to be with them at all times, and they will be your responsibility!
